I first discovered the answer to that question in 1993, and what I found still shocks me today: many herbs labeled as “standardized extracts” are actually spiked with undisclosed synthetic drugs.

Their solution was elegantly simple, profoundly illegal, and deeply dangerous: they began spiking cheap, low-potency herbal powders with synthetic drugs that mimicked the herb’s natural active constituents.
The Spiking Playbook: What They Add and Why
Here are just a few examples of what we’ve uncovered through our testing:

In each case, the supplier saves money by using a fraction of the real herb and bulking it up with a cheap, mass-produced synthetic chemical that happens to fool standard, non-specific tests. The consumer pays for a premium natural extract but receives a counterfeit product cut with industrial compounds.
The Real Danger: Synthetic Drugs Are Not Herbs
This isn’t just a matter of economic fraud. It’s a matter of safety.
Synthetic drugs act differently in the body than do naturally occurring plant constituents. They are often more potent, have different absorption and metabolism profiles, and carry risks that weren’t present in the traditional herbal medicine.
The ephedrine added to spiked Ma Huang, for example, isn’t the same as the complex mixture of alkaloids found naturally in the plant. It’s a pure, potent drug—one that has been linked to heart attacks, strokes, and deaths when misused. Consumers taking what they believe is a gentle herbal energy tonic may actually be ingesting a pharmaceutical dose of a synthetic stimulant, with no warning, no labeling, and no idea of the risk.
The Solution: Advanced Herb Spiking Detection Technology
When I first uncovered this practice in 1993, I made it my mission to develop a foolproof way to detect it. We couldn’t just rely on the same standard tests that the spikers had learned to fool.
I went to work building a sophisticated testing protocol at BioCeuticals Research & Development Analytical Laboratory, a division of All American Pharmaceutical. Our approach combines multiple technologies:
High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) for precise quantification
UV-Vis spectroscopy for initial screening
High-powered electron microscopy for physical inspection
But the true breakthrough came with Near Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, specifically using the Bran+Luebbe InfraProver II FT-NIR instrument. This technology, combined with the BOM (Basic Oil Molecule) Cluster Analysis I developed, allows us to see what other tests miss.
The InfraProver uses patented crystal technology—birefringent crystal wedges combined with polarization techniques—to create a uniquely stable and accurate Fourier Transform Near Infrared analyzer. Unlike traditional grating instruments or other FT systems, this design ensures that both components of light travel through identical paths, eliminating recombination errors that can mask adulteration.
The BOM Cluster Analysis Breakthrough
Many scientists worldwide have called BOM Cluster Analysis the greatest analytical breakthrough since the development of NIR. Here’s why:
NIR creates a molecular fingerprint of a sample. Pure, unadulterated botanical material has a complex, specific fingerprint that reflects its natural origin. When synthetic drugs are added, that fingerprint changes in subtle but detectable ways. BOM Cluster Analysis applies sophisticated mathematical algorithms to detect changes—not just looking for one specific adulterant, but identifying deviations from the expected pattern of a truly natural product.
This technology doesn’t just find what we’re looking for; it finds what we weren’t expecting. It’s the difference between a security guard checking a list and a detective who knows something is wrong the moment they walk into a room.
