On July 1, 2005, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration finally caught on to an age-old trick that I had been warning the industry about for over a decade: the dangerous practice of spiking herbal products with undisclosed pharmaceutical drugs. This case highlighted exactly why advanced herb spiking detection technology is not a luxury—it’s a necessity for protecting public health and brand integrity.

The FDA issued a warning to consumers not to take “Liqiang 4 Dietary Supplement Capsules” because they contained glyburide, a prescription drug used to lower blood sugar that can cause serious, life-threatening complications in people unaware they are consuming it. The product, manufactured by Liqiang Research Institute in China and marketed in U.S. herbal stores and by mail order through Bugle International of Northridge, California, was sold as a “natural” supplement while containing a potent pharmaceutical agent.

The FDA learned of the problem through an anonymous consumer complaint, followed up with testing, and confirmed the presence of glyburide. I have to wonder: where did that tip come from? Could it have been from one of the many brand owners who had grown tired of being undercut by competitors cutting corners with spiked ingredients? Perhaps. But one thing is certain—this case was just the tip of a much larger iceberg.

The Evolving Playbook: From Blood Sugar Drugs to Steroids

Around the same period, another troubling trend emerged. With the FDA’s ban on the raw steroid precursor “Andro” (androstenedione), I began detecting a dramatic rise in herbal products claiming to increase libido or testosterone that were actually spiked with synthetic steroids or unapproved drug analogs.

In each case, consumers seeking a natural boost to vitality or hormone health were unknowingly ingesting synthetic hormones or erectile dysfunction drugs—compounds with real risks, real side effects, and no place in a product sold as a herbal supplement.

Why Traditional Testing Fails

Standard compendial methods—the kind used by many contract laboratories and routine quality control departments—are not designed to catch this kind of adulteration. They look for what’s supposed to be there, not for what shouldn’t be. If a test method is set up to quantify “total saponins” in Tribulus, it won’t flag the presence of a synthetic steroid. The steroid simply doesn’t appear on the radar.

This is precisely why spikers have been able to operate with impunity for so long. They aren’t trying to hide the drug; they’re exploiting the fact that no one is looking for it.

The Technology That Catches the Cheaters
