You first heard about this topic from me in 1998. Now, as I write this in 2007, we’re watching the same dance play out again—just with a different song in the background. The players change, but the greed remains constant. Many sports nutrition companies have been spiking and cutting protein for years, exploiting loopholes in standard testing to deceive consumers and undercut honest manufacturers. Did you ever wonder why some brands sitting in national stores are so cheap? Guess what? The Wake-Up Call: The 2007 Pet Food Scandal
I’m sure you remember the news about the 2007 pet food contamination crisis. It was a tragedy that killed countless pets and shook consumer confidence. But here’s what most people missed: that food wasn’t accidentally contaminated. It was deliberately “spiked” (adulterated) with an industrial chemical called melamine to make wheat gluten appear to contain more protein than it actually did.
So how did this happen? For routine protein testing in the food industry, scientists have long relied on methods like the Kjeldahl or Dumas tests. These methods are simple in concept: you measure the total nitrogen in a sample, and then calculate the protein content mathematically from that nitrogen level. This works because protein is consistently about 16% nitrogen.
The problem is that unscrupulous manufacturers figured out they could fool this test. They used inexpensive base materials, such as rice flour, and mixed them with a chemical called melamine. Melamine (C3H6N6) is an organic compound often combined with formaldehyde to form a fire-resistant, heat-tolerant synthetic polymer used in products such as whiteboards, floor tiles, kitchenware, and fire-retardant fabrics. But most importantly for this story, melamine is 66% nitrogen by mass—and it is very, very cheap.
By adding melamine to low-grade ingredients, manufacturers could artificially inflate the nitrogen reading, causing standard tests to report a much higher “protein” content than was actually present. Consumers paid for protein; they got plastic chemicals instead.
From Pet Food to Protein Powder
So what does a pet food scandal have to do with your protein powder? Everything.
The FDA investigation that followed the pet food crisis revealed that melamine had been found in wheat gluten, soy, and rice protein imported from China. But the question every supplement brand should be asking is: what about milk and whey proteins? If it could happen there, why not here?
Have you ever noticed how some companies can sell their whey protein so cheaply—50% below everyone else—and still claim to be profitable? I wonder how they manage that. The answer, all too often, is that they’re not selling what they claim to be selling.
